The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an English-language test that measures the ability of the English language at the university level of non-native speakers. The TOEFL exam is approved and recognized by more than 10,000 universities, colleges, and academic organizations across the whole world. The Test of English as a Foreign Language, along with the IELTS, is the major and most recognized English-language test in the world. The exam is given by the ETS in specific centers.
Now, there are two types of TOEFL exams: the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) and the TOEFL Paper-based test (PBT).
What are the sections of the TOEFL?
The test is divided into four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. There is a break of 20 minutes between the listening and the speaking section.
Reading: this section of the exam lasts between 60 and 80 minutes and it is composed of 36 to 56 questions. The task to do in this section is to read 3 to 4 passages from academic texts and answer the respective questions.
Listening: in the listening section the student has 60 to 90 minutes to complete it. It is composed of 34 to 51 questions about lectures, classroom discussions and conversations.
Speaking: this section of the TOEFL lasts 20 minutes and the students has to complete 6 tasks.
Writing: the writing section of this test takes 50 minutes and it is composed of 2 tasks.
Where and when can you take the TOEFL?
There are many dates to take this exam, over 50 dates per year. All of them in specific and allowed centers worldwide, and you can retake the test as many times you want in order to improve your TOEFL score. The only restriction is that you cannot take the test more than once in a 12-day period.
When are the TOEFL scores available?
If you have done the TOEFL iBT you will have access to your score 10 days after your exam date. This is one of the many advantage the iBT has over the PBT.
The printed score reports will be sent to you after approximately 13 days, but you have to add the days it will take to be delivered to you. If you live in the United States, this would take 7 to 10 days. If you live in a country other than the U.S. it will take even more time, depends of your location.
When are the TOEFL scores expired?
Your TOEFL score expires after 2 years. During that time, you are allowed to send them to any institution you desire.
Can the TOEFL exam be rescheduled or cancelled?
Yes. You can reschedule or cancel it up to 4 full days before the date.
