The amount of international golf players who decide to pursue their athletic career with golf scholarships in the United States while they start a university career is increasing; as is the case of Jon Rahm, who was offered a golf scholarship at Arizona State University where he finished his studies in the specialty of communication.
The United States offers many facilities to combine sport and studies. This is due to the importance they give to sports and the grants offer by the administration in the United States.
Many students around the globe are forced to abandon their athletic careers due to the academic requirements. Therefore, they decide to seek in the United States the possibility of developing, both their studies and their sports career, since there are offered all kinds of scholarships; as well as in golf and other sports, also academic and for being international student.
Many will think that this option is only for high level golf players, but it is not. In the United States there are many universities with different levels that offer different types of scholarships. High-level players, such as Carlota Ciganda and Jon Rahm, have access to golf scholarships at the most prestigious universities in the United States. But keep in mind that in the US there are many more universities that offer golf scholarships for athletes with a level lower than these great athletes. You would not need to be a Tiger Woods to fulfil your dream of studying and playing in the United States.
In the universities of the United States, generally, the golf teams are composed of a number of 7-15 players. Normally, in the male teams are more players than in the female teams. During the time of golf tournaments, each university has a team composed of five players, sometimes, they bring a few more to play as individuals. To select the five players that will go to each tournament, they would had played what they call, ‘qualifying’, which are mini tournaments between the players in the same team. After the qualifying, the five best results go to the tournament. By doing this, there will be no favouritism when it comes to choose the 5 players.
Depending on the division or league your university is in, the teams will travel to one place or another, normally, the better the university, the more expenses they can afford. This means traveling to places such as Hawaii, Puerto Rico, etc. The tournaments are usually two-three-day tournaments plus one day for practice. This means one day of classes will be lost at least. This implies being very update with the studies, in addition to letting the teachers know the cause of your absence and everything will be facilities.
Every day of the tournament, the worst result out of five will be eliminated, and the total sum of the eight or twelve results, depending on the tournament´s days, will be the final result. The best teams of each Conference will compete in the national tournament of the United States, ‘Nationals’.
The fun of being part of the golf team at a university in the United States, is that you can play in new golf courses while you build a good relationships with your teammates and coaches.
One of the most prestigious professional tournaments in the world of golf is approaching and everyone is waiting with great enthusiasm is the British Open Championship. This tournament is the oldest male golf major. Since the year that began in 1860, this tournament is held every year at one of the prestigious golf clubs in the United Kingdom or Scotland. What is famous about this tournament is that it is always held in a ‘links’ field, in other words, on a golf course located in a coastal area where sand dunes predominate and is exempt of rough. The Open begins on the third Thursday of July. This year the 147th edition of the tournament will be held from Thursday, July 19 to Sunday, July 22 at the Carnoustie Championship Golf Course. This course is considered one of the ‘links’ with more difficulties in the world.
Throughout the year, four majors are held and are always played in the same order: Augusta Masters, US Open, British Open and the PGA. The majors can be compared to the four Grand Slam that are played in tennis each year.
From past big stars like Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton, Harry Vardon, and Walter Hagen, through modern legends like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros to exceptional talents of now a days like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy; the best golfers have participated in the British Open having won it at least once. More than one golfer has won more than one British Cup.
It will be a difficult Open to win since the British Triple Champion, Tiger Woods, returns to play after three years, but I think with fewer posibilities as the many good players that will play the tournament such as Spieth, Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm, Jason Day, Koepka, etc.
The 2017 Open was taken home by an American, Jordan Spieth, matching Tiger and Seve, who by the age of 23 had already won two majors. Being Spieth, the youngest winner of the British Open since Ballesteros.
The current British Open champion, Jordan Spieth, studied at the University of Texas. In his first year of college as a college golfer, he won three events as individual and his team won the conference championship, in addition, he was named ‘player of the year’ and first team ‘All-American’. In his second year of college, Spieth had the opportunity to become a professional golf player, and he did not reject it.
A young Spanish golfer star is Jon Rahm, who will shortly fight in the British Open to get his first major – hopefully this year-, and also match Jordan Spieth and Ballesteros in being the youngest winner of the British Open.
After finishing his communication degree at the University of Arizona State, Jon Rahm abandoned amateur golf after the US Open in 2016, where it is noteworthy that he was the best amateur and gave way to professional competition.
Although the British Women’s Open is not as famous as the males Open, as it happens in all sports – unfortunately-, it should be noted that, like the male Open, it is one of the most important of all the year. This tournament is held the following week to the male´s Open. The best women golfers of the professional circuits play. Like the male British Open, this tournament is played in different golf courses in England and Scotland but is not always played in ‘links’ fields.
Carlota Ciganda is one of the many professional golfers who study in an American university, the same one to which Jon Rahm years later studied at, Arizona State University. She acquired a career in finance.
In addition to the facilities to combine sports and studies, another point in favor for studying abroad, is the possibility of learning and improving other languages. Almost all golfers and athletes can express themselves in several languages.
If you would like to have the opportunity to study in the USA thanks to a Golf Scholarship, you should register in Mooxye and create a profile. You will find all the information needed once you are registered.
