Due to the time, many students prefer to have an online class in their schedule. This is due to the extra time it will allow you.
The online courses are non-face-to-face classes, in which the material is uploaded to the university website – there they call it “Blackboard”. On Blackboard, there will be a script with the duties of the whole week and a deadline- that’s why there are no excuses when uploading a job late. Because these courses are not face-to-face, there will be more homework to do, that can be more readings, quizzes and online tests but without going to class.
Assignments and exams are done through Blackboard. Also, online courses require “discussion boards” which are usually exercises to write a paragraph about issues that teachers in Blackboard do. These answers will be seen by the rest of your classmates and they will be able to express their opinions and respond to your proposals – always respecting each other-. Although they are not face-to-face, when you have any questions about the subject, you can send an email to the teacher and arrange a meeting to solve your problems, so the teacher-student communication is not complicated.
Online classes have the same value in terms of credits as ground classes that are face-to-face. Between 1-3 credits. The University only allows 1 class online per semester, although sometimes they can make exceptions.
The total cost of all classes will be the same for 12-18 / 19 credits. This is what they call “Tuition and fees”. This varies according to the university but is usually around 10,000-30,000 USD / year. This number of credits is required if you are “full-time student”. If you are a “part-time student” this student will be taking less than 12 credits. Once the student exceeds the maximum number of credits allowed by the university, each additional credit will have a cost depending on the university, but is approximately between 500-800 USD.
The answer is yes. Many students take classes during the summer and many are the reasons why they do it:
Summer classes, can be both in ground classes and online. There is a difference in the number of credits you can take since there is no full-time students or part-time students. You can take the number of classes you want and the price is per credit. Each credit has a cost between 500-800 USD. Each class has the same number of credits as during the school year, these can be between 1-3 credits.
There are a minority of students who decide to take summer classes, so these classes have a smaller number of students. During the summer the number of students can be around 10, and during the school year around 30.
Classes during the summer are an advantage for students who want to finish with two majors in four years, or with a minor. Yes, it is true that we all like to enjoy the summer without having to study but if we stop and think, in the United States we have 3 MONTHS OF SUMMER HOLIDAYS!! So taking two or three classes during the summer is not so much effort.
Depending on the class you are interested in during the summer, these may vary in duration, there are some that are only a couple of weeks while others may last a month.
In my opinion, online classes are a good option for students who have little free time, such as athletes. By this way, they will have more time to practice, they will not have to attend the class because it is online, and they will only have to work for that class when they have homework, exams or assignments.
I also suggest trying to take a class that you have failed during the school year. This way, all the extra time you have while you are taking this class, you can spend it in preparing and study the class in which you had more difficulties. There are many students, that if during the school year they had a low grade in a class, and believe that they could improve that grade for their final GPA, they will take this class during the summer to try to get the highest grade possible.
There is another option that would be to do summer internships. This would be worth as credits for the university, these credits can be between 3-6. You will have work experience in addition to getting credits for your university degree.
To save some money, it is recommendable to try to take summer classes in institutions where the credits are cheaper as well as transferable to your university. But do not decide to take a class the summer before graduating because many universities require that your last 60 credits belong to the institution in which you would graduate.
