Nowadays, we live in a world that is highly connected. Everyone can travel low cost and know more in deep about other cultures. For example, we can travel within the Schengen area with a single visa, in a few hours we can travel from Madrid to NYC, or we can even visit inner China. Lots of these experiences were unthinkable some decades ago; however, today, it seems that everything is possible. So, if we can travel to other nations, why not to work there?
First and foremost, it is to understand what is an internship. An internship is a job opportunity that seniors and recent graduates have to gain work experience. During this period of training, the intern is exposed to a real working environment in their field of study. It also helps employers to evaluate them and see if they would fit on the organization as potential employees. Thus, it can be a future job offer. Although the requirements and conditions change from business to business, internships usually are between three and six months with the possibility of expanding the period to one year. They can be paid or unpaid, and the process to be hired is like any other interview job.
While a lot of people think that internships are significant on a professional career, others think they are not that crucial. But, are internships important? Will internship benefit your career?
That is the million-dollar question. Some people think that internships only worth if they are paid and/or in a big company. Others bet for the knowledge interns get doing it, despite what institution they internship for. Both are right some ways, but the core issue is that internships always worth. It is true that the CV looks awesome if you have experience in a renowned multinational. However, if someone only has the possibility of working as an intern in a small company, that experience will be rewarded in the future, even if the period of training is unpaid.
For those who still not sure about the advantages of internships, take a look of the following:
If you pass the hiring process and get the internship, congratulations!! It means that the company is very interested in you. They will spend time and money on teaching you. Therefore, if you do well during the internship, they will probably hire you.
Having complete an internship shows that you are a serious, capable person that is able to sacrifice something in order to achieve its career goals. This experience will give you extra credit over your competitors in front of your future employer.
Companies that offer internships for college students are giving them the opportunity to taste the real world. It is also helpful for students because they can evaluate that company and industry, and see if they like it.
Every intern receives new formation within the standards of the company. They get free education on new technologies, skills, methods, programs, and oral and written communication, among others. They can also improve their current ones.
The fact of getting an internship gives you more prestigious which increase your confidence in future jobs.
While doing the internship, you will attend events and interact with professionals from the industry. Use those opportunities to gain contacts, mentors, references, and new job opportunities.
A lot of degrees, master, and PhDs give the chance of getting credits (validate for one class) through the internship experience.
Where to get an internship if not in America, the land of opportunity?
Thanks to the great number of businesses in the United States, it favors the offer of available internships for college students and fresh graduates. Some of those options are college summer internships, fall internships, federal government internships, graduate internship program, etc.
Depending on what kind of student you are, there are different options. We will divide the requirements and opportunities between nationals and international students- with F1 or J1 American student visa -.
If you have the American citizen the application for an internship will be easy. It is similar to the process of any job offer. First, you need to make a list of the companies you want to apply related to your study field. For instance, if you are studying computer engineering you could be interested in Amazon, Apple, or Google. Second, gather information about how to apply, requirements, how is the interview process, information about the company, deadlines, etc. Big companies usually have several steps and tests on interviews (analytical exercises, group interviews, record interview, face-to-face interviews, etc). Third, once you have analyzed everything about the companies, prepare yourself for the interviews. Do your best!! Four, be ready for the answers: yes, no, or no reply.
Tip: take into account that this process on multinationals takes more than a couple of months, so, apply as soon as possible.
For international students, the process is similar to national students. However, there are more obstacles to overcome before being eligible to apply or get an internship.
There are two types of visa you can get if you are a student and want to study-internship in the USA: F-1 and J-1. Both visas allow students to take part in an internship, but there are some differences among them. For example, what internship opportunities they can participate in.
An F-1 visa allows students to work on campus, which is as a part-time internship, and it is up to 20 hours/week. Nevertheless, they have options to work off-campus. They can apply to a “work authorization” called OPT and CPT. It is important to know that both of them required a lot of paperwork, and at least three months to the government to approve them.
CPT internships: it must be related to the degree, and students usually get credits for some of their classes. They need to have completed their first year of university.
OPT internships: for those students who are in their last year of college are eligible to apply. It must not be related to the degree, but it is more difficult to get it than the CPT. Some good news is that the internships are up to one year and they are often paid.
If you enter the country with a J-1 visa, it allows you to take part in Academic Training which is similar to the OPT. Moreover, if you already have an internship offer, you must apply for a J-1 visa. It has two branches:
Intern: students must have graduated within the last 12 months, or be enrolled in a foreign university.
Trainee: internationals need to possess a degree and one year of work experience. In addition, American sponsorship for international students in the USA is mandatory with this kind of visa.
