You are just about to start your amazing 4 years in the place you have been dreaming about. Maybe you are already thinking about your new friends, new activities, parties and a lot of things. It is very true and natural to feel that way. You might also think you have a long time and time will go slowly during your stay. I was in the same shoe a few years ago. I can honestly tell you that time really flies, if I could go back, I for certain will change how I manage my time.
It’s simple. Time management is for life. There is no specific time frame for it. So why start during college? I just said there is no time frame, we start with college, because you have not been doing it right since the very beginning. Moreover, how you manage your time in college will influence heavily on your life after college. It’s all together.
So, think time management as a jump start kick and a great skill you can or will master. Today I want to share one tip that has been working really well for me even until these days.
If you don’t even have a to-do list, use a calendar instead. Some People prefer a digital calendar, some may prefer a physical calendar. They are all fine, so choose whatever you prefer. The reason why we use calendar instead of a TO-DO list is because the to-do list does not give you a time frame.
Sure, one can argue you can put dates on your to-do list. But it is actually not the same. Having a whole calendar from day 1 to 30really gives you a perspective on time and tasks as a whole. To-do list is more static and don’t have a feeling urgency to it. Imagine you have to submit an important group homework at 13th, and for your part you need to do a research at 10th. Having the calendar in front of you, you can access to a wider view and even set up a reminder on the 12th to remind group member to finish their parts as well.
Putting all your course on your calendar. The goal is to put all the known information on the calendar to set up. Once you have finished that, putting the deadline for each homework and test. You can even put with a brighter color like red. One thing I do is adding addition daily task such as read one article about, for example “How to get good grades”. Small task like that to fill in your calendar. If you know you are going out on a Friday night, Put it on. So, you know, you can catch up with all the work on the following day.
Sometimes I would write down people’s birthday on a calendar just to send them an email to be more personal. Maybe not so much in college but in work place, It is important to keep in mind the small details. Usually the calendar will also have special holidays. Just keep in mind, the calendar is yours to customize. The better you design it, the more useful it will be for you.
Although, the use for calendar is a short or monthly goal. But who says you cannot set long term goal on your calendar. In my case, I always have a session where I write my current stage of life in different areas. For example, I write down currently I am taking 2 internships, and I am aiming to get one more within one month.
Without doubts, it is very beneficial to set up a calendar. It is also important to see beyond why we are doing this. Discipline is one of the core factor in life that in my mind, I believe everyone should have. Having discipline gives you the freedom to be truly free and control your life. Your time in the university will go by really fast, the sooner you start investing in yourself, the better your life after university will be.
Each person has 24 hours. It doesn’t matter if you are a Harvard student or a public-school student. It doesn’t matter if you are the president of the United States or the people who live on the street. We all have finite time and equal amount. Therefore, how you use your time is crucial, and how you use your time can determine who you will be in the future.
I remember when I was in the university. I didn’t have a lot of things on plan like I am now. The only thing I have been doing constantly and managed pretty well is the time to go work out. Now that I look back, I believe it has become a huge asset for me in term of energy and self-esteem. The point I am trying to make is that make a conscious effort on how to use your time and invest in yourself when the moment you set foot on this new adventure.
