If you are thinking of studying abroad in the United States you may have a lot of questions. Therefore, we are bringing you today the answers to the most frequent asked questions students and their families have.
There are two main kind of scholarships you can receive: academics and athletics. The academic scholarships are offered by the universities to students who have a great academic record. These scholarships are usually partial and the amount of money depends of the student’s record, the better grades the student has, the higher the scholarship he or she would receive.
On the other hand, athletic scholarships allow student-athletes to compete and practice sports at a high level while getting a college degree. The American college coaches are constantly looking for international players to offer them a sport scholarship in order to play for their teams. The better the level of the athlete, the higher scholarship he or she would receive.
It depends. Not all the scholarships are full scholarships. Some of them may be 100%, but others may be partial. This means that in many cases the family of the student has to contribute in order to pay all the expenses. In the case of a full scholarship, the family doesn’t have to pay anything. This type of scholarship covers every kind of expense, from tuition, to books, dorms, food, etc. (The only exception are the flight tickets).
You can try to contact Universities and College Coaches by your own, but it’s not an easy task. I highly recommend you hire a specialized agency that would take care of all the process for you. There are many consulting agencies out there that can help you to get a scholarship in the USA like AGM Sports. On the other hand, you can register in Mooxye and create your profile. Mooxye is aiming to be the new “Linkedin” for students and student-athletes will help them to contact Universities and Coaches. You will have all the information needed to complete the process by your own. Also, if you desire, you have the possibility to hire consulting agencies inside the Mooxye platform.
Again, it all depends. But I can tell you that a priori tennis and soccer are the easiest sports. Usually, the individual sports are the easiest one because in these kind of sports the Coach doesn’t need to distribute the scholarships among the whole team.
Our partner AGM, one of the most prestigious athletic consulting agencies in Europe, shared with us their last year result. As an example, Spain, which is the fifth country that send more student-athletes to the United States, 259 young athletes achieved a scholarship in 2017. Out of these 259 students, 172 were men and 87 women. The most popular men’s sport was soccer, while the women’s sports was tennis.
In the United States, there is a law called “Title IX” that obligate universities to offer the same athletic conditions to both men and women. According to this law, the universities must offer the same budget, facilities, mediums and number of scholarships to men’s and women’s sports. The thing here, is that universities grant 85 scholarships to the American Football team. For that reason, women usually have access to more and higher scholarships than men, since there are not women’s American football teams.
Yes, the requisites vary a lot from sport to sport. In Track and Field and Swimming, the only thing that matter are the marks. In Tennis, are important the different rankings like the UTR (University Tennis Ranking), the ITF Ranking, and National Rankings. In Golf for example, is the handicap what matters to get an athletic scholarship. On the other hand, sports like soccer matters the category and the division in which the athlete plays, as well as the sports videos.
We recommend you to start as early as possible, but a great time to do it would be on your junior year of High School. Starting it early will give you enough time to prepare all the process and most important, to prepare the required exams like the SAT and TOEFL. In some sports, like Golf and Hockey, Coaches recruit the players with 2 years of advance.
I know It can seem a little complicate, since there is a lot of information, and this change depends of which sport do you play, or if you opt to get an academic scholarship. This is why I recommend you to register in Mooxye. You have all this information and more in our platform.
No necessarily. You don’t need to have great grades to receive an athletic scholarship, but it is true that the better grades you have, the better. It’s enough to have passed High School.
In order to receive an athletic scholarship at an American university, you need to have the SAT exam and the TOEFL exam. The SAT is an entry exam that most universities in the US required, even for American students. The TOEFL on the other hand, is just required for international students. It measures the student’s level of English.
The scholarships can be modified once you receive them, but it’s unusual. The scholarship can be reduced if the student commits some serious fault or having a notorious decrease in his or her grades.
These are the type of Scholarships you can opt to in the United States. I hope you find this information useful, and if you would like to know more about it, I highly recommend you to register in Mooxye and create a profile.
